We don't broadcast. We only point.
GAIA NEWS holds no broadcast, stores no video and converts nothing. Your browser loads each broadcaster’s own official player directly. All we keep is a list of which station is which official channel.GAIA NEWS
How it works
- A station is registered by its own channel identifier. Every station here is bound to the broadcaster’s own official channel identifier, so it keeps pointing at the same station even if the name or address changes.
- Your browser loads their player. The video travels from the broadcaster to you. It does not pass through a GAIA NEWS server — we don’t have one in the path.
- Status is decided on the spot. The red “Live” mark appears only after the player actually starts and reports a live stream. If it doesn’t start, we say so instead of guessing.
We don’t store video IDs
A 24/7 stream’s video ID changes every time the broadcast restarts, so a stored ID would go stale and start lying. We store only the channel identifier and resolve the rest at the moment you pick a station. That keeps the listing accurate — and, as it happens, keeps us on the safe side of the rules.
What we will never do
- Re-transmit a broadcast
- Pull an HLS (m3u8) stream out of a player
- List an unofficial mirror, or anything sourced from an IPTV list
- Draw our own interface on top of a broadcaster’s player
- Hide the station name or the platform the stream comes from
- Show a station as live when we haven’t seen it play
The dividing line is not embed-versus-link. It is whether the destination belongs to the rights holder. Under Japan’s 2020 amendment to the Copyright Act (Article 113(2)), providing links to infringing material can itself be treated as infringement — where a site is built to steer people toward it and the operator knew, or had reason to know, what it was. So “we only link” is not automatically a defence. Every destination on this site is the broadcaster’s own channel.
How a channel earns its place
- Identity check. We resolve the handle to the channel’s own identifier and match the fetched channel title against our record. While researching this site we found impersonation channels using look-alike characters to pose as a major news agency. HTTP 200 proves a page exists; it proves nothing about who owns it.
- Real player check. We embed the channel exactly the way this site does and watch whether it plays. A station is marked as seen live only if it actually played.
- Ownership shown. State-funded broadcasters carry a State-funded label. We list them with their ownership visible rather than quietly leaving them out — but they never appear as the station that opens first.
What we can’t tell you
- We don’t watch all 122 channels at once. Only the channel you pick is checked, at the moment you pick it.
- Scheduled stations go dark between bulletins. A station marked News hours is live at news hours and off the rest of the day. That is the broadcaster’s choice, not a fault.
- Some embeds are refused in some countries. A stream that plays for a viewer in one country can be blocked for another. When playback is refused we say playback isn’t available here — we don’t claim the station is off the air, because we can’t see that from where we stand.
- Our checks were run from Japan. Any listing note about embedding reflects that vantage point.
Sources
Channel identities were verified against each broadcaster’s own channel. Playback behaviour was measured by embedding each channel and recording what the player reported. The legal framing above draws on the Japan Copyright Act as amended in 2020 (Article 113(2), the “leech site” provision) and on the Supreme Court’s 21 July 2020 retweet judgment, which found that a display that crops out an author’s name can infringe the right of attribution — the reason the station name and platform stay visible on every screen of this site.
